Mollie's Corner: The Life of a Firefighter Cat

Fancy a bit of good news to brighten your morning? Or perhaps you're looking for the results of the last week's community rugby match? Good news, you've come to the right place.

Welcome to Mollie's Corner.

For this week's article, we have a story from our local fire department. A year ago today, Officers Walters and Wells were followed back to the station by a kitten. They gave her some food, some water and a little bit of affection before taking her over to the vet to check for a microchip. The officers had fallen in love with the little ball of fluff and felt determined to bring her back to her rightful home.

Unfortunately, they found that this particular kitten didn't have a home to go back to. So, they decided to try and find her one. They paid out of pocket for all the vaccinations and checks she needed to be picked up for adoption. Meanwhile, the kitten - who their co-workers had affectionately nicknamed Tootie Fruitie after its calico colour - had made herself at home in the fire department. A few weeks into the process it became abundantly clear that Tootie Fruitie had already found her home at the department.

When I first heard a friend talking about this Firefighter Cat I was immediately intrigued. Sure, weve all heard of local libraries with cat companions - but a fire department truly felt like the step up. So, I thought it was worth looking further into. I sent the department an email seeing if I could come and meet Tootie Fruitie and write a story.

Luckily for me, the Walters and Wells were more than happy to have me around. They even offered to give me a tour of the station and a cup of tea while I was there. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and when it came time to meet Tootie herself - she didn't disappoint. She's an expert cuddler, a resourceful napper (She enjoys sleeping in the department's hats and coats!) and an overall star.

Starstruck, Mollie.

P.S. A big thank you to the local fire department for having me around! It was an absolute pleasure to meet you all.
